Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to obtain john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level names remained running.
